Tutorial Run for Data Retrieve in THERPRO
 

    So far most of this chapter have been devoted to the introduction, historical background, structure and data retrieval schemes, and future update and upgrade of THERPRO database.

    In this section, in order to help new users to be familiar with this on-line database, practical data retrieving will be explained in detail with an exemplified tutorial run. As mentioned in section THERPRO provides three data searching schemes: hierarchical search, index search, and direct search. All of these searching methods will be introduced one-by-one and step-by-step using captured on-line screens. For the illustration, UO2 thermal conductivity data measured by Lucuta P.G., Matzke Hj., and Verrall R.A (Journal of Nuclear Materials, 223, 1995) are chosen as a target data.



1. Basic Search
 

    Step 1. This is the basic and primary searching method for the data retrieval in THERPRO database. You are assumed to have already visited this site and seen the home page of this database. Now, to begin the search, you can try either U or O in the periodic table since uranium dioxide consists of uranium and oxygen. Let's try U because uranium is regarded as a major constituent of UO2. Clicking U will lead you to the element level in the following page.
 



    Step 2. Now you are in the element level and see the list of uranium compounds in the right column. To find the thermal conductivity of UO2 you have to move to compound level, thus, click the UO2 in the list.

 

 


    Step 3. Following figure shows the captured screen of the compound level. While you see general properties of the uranium dioxide in the left column, you can find the list of thermo-physical properties in the right column whose data have been collected and stored in this database. Now you are to proceed to property level by clicking Thermal Conductivity in the list.

 


 



    Step 4. You have reached the properties database platform consisting of three levels: property, author, and bibliography level. You see the list of author names alphabetically sorted and ordered in the left column. You are assumed to be interested in Fukushima's work so click the name Fukushima S. in the list.



    Step 5. As seen in the following figure, selection of the author brings out the list of Fukushima's reports list collected and stored in the database in the middle column. You can choose any one of the reports by clicking the check box next to document ID number or make multiple selections. In this example you are assumed to select all. Now you are to press Plot button in the bottom of the screen.


 

 

    Step 6. Plot button finally displays the retrieved data in a graphic form as shown in the following figure. Now you see the UO2 thermal conductivity measurement data reported by Fukushima. In this step, instead of the single report, all of Fukushima's works on the UO2 thermal conductivity measurement are plotted for the illustration.


 

 


    Step 7. If you are an authorized user, you can keep track of the bibliographic information on the retrieved data. Clicking Back button in the bottom of the figure returns you to Step 5. There click the document ID number, then you will see the information in the right next to the publication list.
 

 


 

2. Archive Search
 

    As mentioned, you can try more convenient and powerful ways for the data search than hierarchical method. Since THERPRO database provides indexes of compound and authors, you can retrieve the target data by using the index.

 

    Step 1. You are assumed to have already visited this site and seen the home page of THERPRO. Now, to begin the search, you are to click 'Archive' in the center of upper side in the home page.
 


    Step 2. Clicking 'Archive' leads you to the index menu screen. There you select 'Chemical Formula' or 'Author' or 'Material Category' . Suppose that you have selected chemical formula. Then you will see the list of compound symbols alphabetically sorted as shown in the following figure. Find and click 'UO2', then you will be led to the next step that is exactly identical to the Step 3 in the basic search. Therefore, from the step on you just follow the subsequent steps in the same way as in the basic search until you get the data.
 



 

3. Power Search
 

    Most powerful way of data retrieval is the power search. It can easily done by typing the compound name or chemical formula of interest, property, author's name and/or year of publication in the upper middle area. So this method is strongly recommended for power users.

 

 

    Step 1. You can just  follow the subsequent steps in the same way as in the basic search until you get the data that you want.
